Model-Based Systems Engineer

ZeroAvia produces practical zero emission aviation powertrain targeting 9-19-passenger airplanes to start replacing dirty jet fuel.

ZeroAvia is a leader in zero-emission aviation, flying the world’s largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. Our focus is the design and commercialization of hydrogen-powered aviation solutions to address a variety of markets, initially targeting short-haul, sub-regional commercial flights up to 500 miles. To date, ZeroAvia has secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly for its 6 seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain, passed significant flight tests, and is on track for commercial deliveries by 2023. Its achievements to date were rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member to the UK Jet Zero Council.

ZeroAvia’s powertrain development focuses on tightly integrating H2 Fuel Cell power systems and storage, along with electric drivetrain components, to deliver a unified solution that is both environmentally friendly and economically superior to traditional aircraft drivetrain solutions.

Role

We are seeking a talented and innovative Model-Based Systems Engineer to join our Electric Motor Team at ZeroAvia. As a Model-Based Systems Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the development and integration of electric propulsion systems for hydrogen-electric aircraft. Your expertise in model-based engineering practices will be instrumental in designing, simulating, and optimizing complex systems to achieve the highest level of performance, safety, and reliability.

  • Model Development: Create and maintain detailed physics-based models of electric propulsion systems, including electric motors, power electronics, control systems, and other related components.
  • Simulation and Analysis: Utilize model-based engineering tools and simulations to analyze system behavior, performance, and interactions under different operating conditions.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate and validate models, ensuring that they accurately represent the behavior of the actual system components.
  • Requirements Analysis: Work closely with stakeholders to elicit, analyze, and define system requirements, ensuring that they are correctly captured in the models.
  • Model Validation: Validate models against experimental data and real-world measurements, ensuring accuracy and reliability in the representation of the system's behavior.
  • Model-Based Design: Utilize model-based techniques to guide the design process, identify optimization opportunities, and assess design trade-offs for the electric propulsion system.
  • Performance Optimization: Use model-based simulations to optimize the system's performance, efficiency, and energy consumption, while meeting safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Systems Integration Testing: Support integration testing by collaborating with test engineers to validate and verify the system's performance against the model predictions.
  • Documentation: Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation of models, simulations, and analysis results to facilitate knowledge sharing and ensure reproducibility.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience as a Model-Based Systems Engineer, preferably with exposure to complex systems in the aviation, aerospace, or automotive industry.
  • Strong proficiency in model-based engineering tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, or other relevant software.
  • Solid understanding of electric propulsion systems, electric motors, power electronics, and control systems.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering principles and practices, including requirements analysis and systems integration.
  • Experience in system-level modeling and simulation of dynamic systems is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Knowledge of hydrogen fuel cell technology and its implications on system design and performance is a plus.
