Fusion chamber gas dynamics simulations lead

We will make fusion power a reality within a decade by constructing the world’s highest-energy laser system and combining proven technologies in a way no one else saw.

Xcimer Energy leverages decades of research on Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) combined with groundbreaking new laser architecture. Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, Xcimer has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.

In this role, you will be able to apply your skills to simulate complexgas dynamics phenomena in our fusion chamber, which is protected from the fusion target emissions by a thick molten saltwall. This role involves working closely with the rest of the team to plan for integration ofsimulations results into detailed R&D roadmaps as well as planning and executing early experiments.

Major duties and Responsibilities:

- Execute gas dynamics simulations to study phenomena taking place within the fusion chamber, including effects of fusion target emissions (x-rays, ions and neutrons) on liquid wall and other chamber components.
- Build and maintain computational capabilities required to understand chamber clearing effects in between fusion target shots.
- Analyze and communicate simulations results by working closely with the team and outside consultants, to rapidly iterate on chamber and liquid wall design parameters.
- Coordinate all work on chamber clearing modeling, including work at partner institutions and interactions with other labs that that own simulation codes (such as FLASH, BLASTFOAM, other as appropriate)
- Identify early R&D activities based on small experiments that help validate and improve simulations (e.g., effects of shock on jets, measurement of recombination and condensation rates in similar conditions).
- Formulate a technical roadmap to achieve PDR for a pilot plant involving within 5 years and lead execution against this roadmap, including experimental and prototype systems as needed.
- Contributor to project risk management for all aspects related to chamber gas dynamics, including identification of risk mitigations approaches.
- Support the VP of Chamber and Plant Design with all aspects of system integration and project management related to the chamber gas dynamics.

Minimum Qualifications:

- PhD in Nuclear Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 yrs of experience in multiphysics and multiscale CFD simulations in complex systems at extreme conditions.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, technical staff and others (domestic and international).
- Ability to clearly express and critique ideas.
- Great communication and organizational skills.
- Strong problem solving skills, ability to approach new problems with creativity.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in radiation hydrodynamics.
- Experience in radiochemistry.
- Experience in setting up new laboratory facilities.
- Experience with molten salt systems.
