Tax Manager

Position Overview

This position will provide comprehensive support to Proterra’s corporate finance team that supports Proterra’s Manufacturing and Engineering operations. In this role, you will assist third-party tax preparers and respond to taxing authorities with information on corporate tax compliance and other notices, as needed. You will report to the VP Treasurer and collaborate with other finance and accounting team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and manufacturing facilities in Los Angeles, CA and Greenville, SC.

About the Role – You Will:
- Assist third-party tax preparer with information for all corporate income tax compliance.
- Assist responding to taxing authority inquiries, audits, and other notices, as needed.
- Prepare and maintain tax return/provision work papers necessary to substantiate book/tax differences, tax return positions taken, apportionment factors, etc.
- Collaborate on tax solutions with other departments to ensure necessary tax information is collected and proper tax methods are implemented.
- Anticipate, monitor, and analyze tax regulatory and compliance developments, accounting pronouncements, and tax law changes and proactively address potential impacts to the Company and its tax accounting and reporting functions.
- Read and interpret tax law and assess the company’s policies to ensure that taxes are prepared in compliance with tax legislation.
- Oversight of Indirect Tax Compliance: Sales and Use Tax, Personal Property Tax and Real Property Tax.
- Determine effective tax rate impact from tax planning initiatives.
- Identify and implement process improvements and automation throughout the tax reporting and filing process to gain efficiencies.
- Become proficient utilizing the company’s ERP and consolidation software.
- Prepare tax related journal entries and reconcile tax accounts.
- Assist in maintaining internal controls and record retention polices to comply with SOX and government regulations.
- Assist on special projects as necessary; Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Coordinate and manage the compliance engagement for the preparation of non-U.S. income tax returns by external service provider.
- Assist in identifying, analyzing, and implementing tax planning opportunities, including M&A transactions and business initiatives and ensure tax planning is appropriately reflected in the tax provision.
- Build and effectively maintain relationships with internal stakeholders including business partners in the finance organization, FP&A, treasury, SEC Reporting, Accounting and other functional groups
- Manage relationship with external auditors to ensure sufficiency and accuracy of tax information in the financial statements and represent the reporting and transaction positions taken the Company’s financial statements.
- Other duties as assigned by management.

Your Experience Includes
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, finance, business or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred.
- Proven experience as a tax manager, public accountant or similar role.
- The ability to work with different taxation software.
- Extensive knowledge of tax legislation.
- US and Canadian GST experience is required.
- Experience creating workpapers/support to substantiate filings required
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
- Sound problem-solving skills
- Minimum 8 years of experience
