Position Scope

This is a senior technical role for a Chemical or Process Engineer with significant operational experience from chemical or petrochemical production plant(s). The ideal candidate will have experience with the practical aspects of engineering in a chemical plant operations environment including administrative duties such as development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Management of Change (MoC), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), planning and scheduling, hands-on troubleshooting, and failure Root Cause Analysis (RCA). The candidate should also have experience with engineering design work, or implementation of technical upgrade projects including turn-around and commissioning activities within chemical process plants with a focus on pulp and paper, burners/furnaces, solids handling or similar plant operations.
- Reporting to the Manager, Process Engineering (Operations).
- Contribute to a positive safety culture.
- Support equipment/process optimization and data collection/analysis in order to drive down levelized cost of CO2 capture.
- Develop and implement operational excellence standards and practices within the process engineering discipline.
- Responsible for keeping plant operational procedures (e.g. SOP, MoC, PHA) up-to-date in line with industry best practices.
- Mentor junior and intermediate Process Engineers.

Responsibilities
- Act as senior chemical engineering resource and subject matter expert within the Operations Team to drive operational excellence.
- Apply chemical and process engineering experience to optimize uptime, output and operability of process equipment. Assist in development of an operating approach based on Statistical Process Control (SPC) to achieve aforementioned goal.
- Own the development and ongoing review of on-line dashboards and daily/weekly/monthly reports to track plant KPIs including uptime and efficiency.
- Own responsibility for developing and maintaining accurate and repeatable sampling systems and procedures for accurate data collection.
- Own the MoC process for all modifications that are below the threshold of capital projects:
- Coordinate all MoCs from initiation to execution.
- Maintain the MoC register.
- Develop workplans, schedules, BoMs and material requisitions for MoCs.
- Lead or participate in PHA and Hazop sessions for MoCs and major projects.
- Lead or participate in the development, maintenance and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Mentor junior and intermediate Process Engineers specifically in operational excellence, and plant performance improvement.
- Identify process and equipment characterization opportunities across CO2 capture, regeneration and production operations.
- Make use of appropriate Quality Management tools and techniques to ensure that all learning and development opportunities are identified and exploited.
- Collaborate with CE’s plant engineering team to define future plant control narratives and philosophies.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:  BSc Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering.
Experience: 8+ years of experience as a process engineer in operating chemical plant(s).
- Chemical plant operations experience in pulp and paper, burners/furnaces, solids handling, or other chemical industries.
- Strong background applying engineering principles in a plant/field operations environment.
- Experience with operating, maintaining and troubleshooting reactors, pressure vessels, rotating equipment, liquid/slurry/solids transportation and storage.
- Experience with development, maintenance and control of procedures such as SOP, MoC, PHA, RCA.
- Experience with a wide range of instrumentation and analytical measurement techniques.
- Proficiency with Excel, Word and Power Point is required. Experience with Seeq, Minitab and MS Projects an asset.
- Experience with Statistical Process Control would be and asset.
- Lab experience as it relates to process control and monitoring.
- Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with EGBC.
