Senior Manufacturing Engineer, Project Management

Heliogen is a renewable energy technology company focused on eliminating the need for fossil fuels in heavy industry and powering a sustainable future. The company’s AI-enabled, modular concentrated solar technology aims to cost-effectively deliver near 24/7 carbon-free energy in the form of heat, power, or green hydrogen fuel at scale – for the first time in history.

You Aspire To:

Own end-to-end project management of the rapid manufacture of jigs/fixtures, tooling, and R&D parts/assemblies using a variety of planning/scheduling tools, CAD packages, and outside suppliers. Your high attention to detail not only ensures projects are built to print but also enables constructive feedback to be given to designers, regarding ease of manufacture and cost reduction opportunities. When time is of the essence, your ability to collaborate with design partners directly enables the fabrication of prototype parts, to design intent, without drawings. The ideal candidate is experienced in achieving on-time-delivery and right-first-time execution of various mechanical and electromechanical designs.

Responsibilities
- Act as a professional point of contact for prototyping requests
- Manage a priority-based workload consisting of multiple projects requested by multiple teams
- Interpret technical documents via request and translate into clear and concise scopes of work
- Order materials and hardware in accordance with engineering definition
- Interact with external suppliers to ensure on-time-delivery and continued positive relationships
- As appropriate, order, record, and manage inventory (consumables)
- Engage with Engineering and Manufacturing departments to accomplish tasks on time to the right level of quality
- As requested, provide data and input for departmental performance reports
- Continuously feedback to management and across channel to improve the pace of innovation and manufacturing
- Elevate risks and concerns to management in a timely manner
- When required, assist other teams within the business to achieve company goals
- When required, assist in the design and manufacture of shop-aids and tools
- Provide training to less experienced or new team members/colleagues
- Operate general shop equipment and vehicles (forklifts, boom lifts, scissor lifts, etc.)
- Ensure all colleagues working in the Prototype Shop adhere to safety standards, company policies, and equipment operating procedures
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient, safe, clean, and effective work environment

The activities above may include the need to support both US and international locations. Visits to supplier locations and various Heliogen sites/locations (including project sites) may be required.

What's Essential:

  • 5+ years of experience working in a project management role in a manufacturing environment (such as: aerospace, automotive, construction)
  • Detailed knowledge of various production processes including CNC machining (3/5 Axis Mill, 2 Axis Lathe w/ live tooling), manual machining, welding (GMAW/FCAW/GTAW), precision assembly (mechanical, electrical, fluids), complex integration
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience with capacity modeling, process mapping, and fault analysis
  • Cost estimating, materials consulting, tooling design/fabrication and post machining process experience
  • Fully conversant with Engineering blueprint drawings and GD&T
  • Strong communication skills; must be comfortable with giving feedback to design teams on best practice and fabrication methods
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment

Desirable Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline
  • Operation of all rapid tooling shop equipment, including manual mills/lathes, grinders, precision measuring equipment, etc.
  • Practical knowledge of advanced production processes including stamping, injection molding, break forming, robotic welding, casting, 3D Printing (FDM, SLA, SLS), etc.
  • Deliver continuous improvement activities resulting in a continuous reduction in lead times/costs for prototype tooling delivery
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP/MES systems
  • Startup company experience is highly desirable
