About SHYFT Power Solutions
At SHYFT Power Solutions, we're on a mission to ensure that clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions can scale and sustainably meet demand. We build IoT and integrated software solutions to optimize energy asset performance (that's solar, battery, grid, and/or generator systems) and help our customers, renewable energy companies, facility managers and real estate developers improve operational efficiency while at it. Today, nearly every major bank in Nigeria has a branch using SHYFT technology to ensure reliable and affordable power. With over 3,000kW of energy assets being managed by SHYFT technology in emerging markets like Nigeria, we're a catalyst for the energy transition.

As a venture-backed company, SHYFT’s culture encompasses limited hierarchy, creativity, and initiative all while delivering the benefits of a larger group (i.e. prominent customers and resourceful advisors & investors). We’re a team that thrives in the midst of challenges and finds fulfillment in building exceptional products that solve real problems.

We’ve been fortunate to be funded by some of the greatest investors in Silicon Valley and around the world including Total Carbon Neutrality Ventures, Softbank, and Powerhouse Ventures among many more. The leadership and advisors bring together Stanford engineers, ex-Tesla executives, and experienced Nigerian operations professionals.

What you'll do
- Design, develop and test firmware/embedded software for SHYFT products, both existing and in development
- Identify and define requirements related to firmware/embedded systems and scope projects to meet these requirements
- Test, evaluate and improve hardware designs for SHYFT products, including pcb bring up testing, field trials and product revisions for improved performance
- Collaborate closely with the software team to implement communication interfaces and new firmware functionality to support the ongoing development of new features
- Work with SHYFT operations personnel to carry out field testing, validation, or troubleshooting of new prototypes, or deployed products
- Take lead on embedded projects, keeping the CTO and other stakeholders up to date on project risks, milestones, and resource needs, to ensure successful project outcomes
- You'll report directly to the CTO but regularly engage with Product, Hardware, and Software teams.

This role represents a lead position on the embedded team at SHYFT. You'll be leading a small group of embedded developers, as well as collaborating at times with contractors or consultants on specific projects. The focus for this role is on firmware / embedded software development, however there will be some hardware work involved so it is important for the candidate to have some experience with hardware design and testing as well.

Who you are
- 5 or more years of professional experience in embedded engineering development,
- Experience working on, and deploying code to, at least one production stage product
- Experience with hardware design, including schematic capture and pcb layout
- Experience with pcb bring-up testing and other hardware testing, for example field trials or reliability/environment testing
- Proficiency with C/C++ (substantial experience in Arduino programming is a plus)
- Experience with hardware communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) and working with various peripheral ICs such as flash memory or power management devices
- Experience with connected products, and designing and implementing interfaces to exchange data with cloud software services
- Attentiveness to testing code thoroughly to meet product requirements
- Strong communication and presentation skills, comfort in describing project status as well as technical challenges to the team in a manner that keeps work effectively on track
- Flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment like that of an early-stage startup

Bonus Qualifications:
- Experience with unit testing frameworks for Arduino-type devices or other embedded systems
- Experience developing wireless communication libraries using technologies such as LoRa or Zigbee
- Prior experience working within the Particle ecosystem of products
- Knowledge of energy systems, especially solar and battery energy systems, or other renewable energy technologies
- Familiarity with the challenges and requirements of deploying products in developing markets, and creating firmware that is fault-tolerant and easily managed in remote locations

Benefits
SHYFT Power Solutions offers competitive benefits including health insurance and a generous vacation policy. We value our teammates and prioritize incentivizing them accordingly.

If you’re excited about our company and environmental mission, and this looks like a fit, you should apply!

We are an equal opportunity employer and we look forward to hearing from you.
