Overview

Geothermal energy is the heat below our feet that’s stored in rock and circulated by fluids. In special geologic cases, that heat is highly concentrated at shallow depths in high enough quantities (think of the Old Faithful Geyser at Yellowstone National Park) that it can be tapped for power generation. At Zanskar, we’re laser focused on developing and commercializing new exploration technologies to make geothermal scalable and a vital contributor to a fully carbon-free electricity grid.

Zanskar Background

Zanskar is a geothermal exploration and technology company accelerating the transition to carbon-free electricity generation by identifying and characterizing new geothermal resources for development. Zanskar is a team composed of geoscientists, data scientists and seismologists focused on building new geothermal exploration and development tools. Zanskar is based in the Salt Lake City, UT metro area and partners with independent geothermal power plant developers and operators. Zanskar has received financial backing from a syndicate of investors, including Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Prime Impact Fund, MunichRe Ventures, Safar Partners, and First Star Ventures.

Position Available

Zanskar has an opportunity for a Seismology intern to build more efficient and effective filters for DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) data using deep learning methods. This position will be started as an intern position, but potentially be turned to full-time depending on performance and project status. This work is expected to start from January, 2023 and continue for 3-6 months. This Seismology intern will work with the seismology team at Zanskar, as well as project partners at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL).

Duties
- Work with the project team (Zanskar + LBNL) to generate labeled DAS datasets from different geologic settings for different types of events (e.g., microearthquakes) using a customized seismic noise attenuation workflow
- Work with the project team to train convolutional neural networks, evaluate performance and adjust parameters and boundary conditions as needed
- Support (when needed) other related R&D work with the seismology team at Zanskar

Qualifications
- Pursuing (or holding) a PhD degree in Seismology or closely related technical fields-Solid background and proven experience with signal processing
- Proficient in programming with MATLAB, Python, etc
- Knowledge and experience with deep learning methods
- DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) related experience is preferred but not required
- Minimum 12 weeks’ availability for internship (part-time or full-time optionality)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills

Location and Benefits
- The position is preferred to be in person and is located in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area and lasts for about ~3-6 months from the hire date of January, 2023
- Pay is commensurate with experience and will be hourly
