Scientist

As a Scientist you will use your experience of molecular biology and biochemistry to identify enzymes with improved characteristics. You will use cutting edge techniques and state-of-the-art equipment in order to isolate improved clones in a minimal timeframe. This process is supported by leading-edge computational design and determined in part by the commercial and process development teams, thus feeding into commercially viable and fully scalable enzymatic bioprocesses. You will be involved in activities such as:
- Use of high throughput screens for identification of improved mutants.
- Continual optimisation of current methods and workflows as well as the development of new/novel assays as processes demand.
- Use of high-end automation and integrated workflows.
- Work together with other members of the Enzyme Engineering team as well as other R&D teams including computational biologists, strain engineers and process engineers.
- Help to build-out new experimental facilities in the laboratory to enable rapid generation and testing of enzymes.

We would like to hear from you if you have:
- Strong technical background in biochemistry.
- PhD in chemical biology, synthetic biology, or similar field.
- Min. 2-3 years relevant industry/academic experience.
- Practical knowledge of enzymology and assay techniques.
- Experience of performing and developing high throughput enzyme activity assays.
- Experience in recombinant protein expression and purification.
- Experience working with multiple host organisms such as Gram +/-ve bacteria and yeast.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, working across multiple projects/experiments simultaneously.

Cherries on the cake would be:
- Experience of assay techniques such as mass spectrometry, flow cytometry or high throughput plate-based assays.
- Experience of high yield protein production and secretion systems.
- Experience in biotechnology and fermentation.
- Experience developing automation scripts/workflows .
- Experience of in silico modelling.
- Experience of handling and analysing very large datasets generated by high throughput assays.
