Research & Development Engineering Intern

Overview

Are you looking to make a difference in the world? Tender is revolutionizing the food industry by solving a major global challenge: how to make meat production ethical and sustainable. Going beyond the existing plant-based burgers, we are developing alternative meat whole-cuts – think steaks and chicken breasts – using innovations in manufacturing, materials science, and tissue engineering. This will transform how the world consumes meat and protein. Spun out of Harvard University in 2020, we are actively building our core team.

We are hiring a Research & Development Engineering Intern to help design and build our next generation food manufacturing systems and processes. You will work closely with our Engineering, Materials, and Food teams to scale R&D discoveries and formulations using novel food production technologies. You will assist in developing processes to transition new alternative meat products from benchtop to pilot scales, as well as laying the fundamental groundwork to support future production.

Responsibilities
- You’ll work between the Materials and Engineering teams to help design and test equipment & processes intended to scale production of novel alternative meat formulations.
- You’ll be responsible for scaling benchtop food manufacturing processes that will serve as the platform for production of the next generation of Tender’s alternative meats.
- You will work closely with the Food Team to help design and scale downstream processes critical for pilot manufacturing.
- You’ll help identify key pilot processing methods that coincide with current production scale to ensure successful product manufacturing.
- You’ll have the opportunity to find a side interest within the team and run fundamental research to better understand the breadth of Tender’s technology.
- You’ll routinely communicate with our team members, strategic partners, manufacturers, and industry experts to improve our processes and products.

About You

  • You are currently enrolled in a Chemical Engineering (or equivalent) Bachelor’s degree program.
  • Bonus: You have experience in process engineering, or food processing.
  • You are excited about joining an early-stage food technology startup, where you will have an ambiguous, dynamic role and will work autonomously on high-impact projects.
  • You have a passion to change the world for the better. You are not just looking to cash a paycheck – what you do for work matters to you deeply.
  • You have strong organizational skills and demonstrated experience prioritizing multiple deliverables.
  • You demonstrate strong attention to detail and can spot what others have missed.
  • You are experienced in designing hypothesis-driven experiments and are comfortable presenting your findings to a team of multidisciplinary scientists.
  • You are fluent in Windows 11 and comfortable using Excel.
  • You are able to commit to a 6 month long internship.

Why work with us?
