Process Development Scientist

Ark Biotech is powering the most important infrastructure buildout of this generation to transform how people consume protein. Ark is a B2B company engineering and designing next-generation production systems for the cultivated meat industry. We are a venture-backed startup driven by a desire to create a better food system for the planet and its inhabitants. At Ark, you will have the opportunity to solve difficult problems that matter and apply cutting-edge engineering and science in an environment that rewards creativity and visionary approaches.

About the role

Ark is seeking a Process Development Scientist with cell culture process development experience to join our Process Science team.

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the process development of cultivated meat cell culture scale-up, from static and small-scale dynamic culture to 1000+ L. This will require experimental design, wet-lab work, and data analysis for cell expansion at increasing scale levels.

As a Process Development Scientist, you will be expected to drive the process development activities in conventional and innovative bioproduction systems consistent with Ark’s technical roadmap. You will be given autonomy within the scopes defined for you and are encouraged to bring new ideas and innovation to the table.

Key responsibilities

- Establish process baseline and key process parameters to support animal cell culture scale-up
- Adapt animal cells to ADC-free media and to dynamic cell culture (e.g., shake flask, spinner flasks, benchtop bioreactors, wave reactors, novel systems) to enable cell expansion and tissue maturation
- Evaluate cell culture performance in different operation modes and optimize cell culture conditions to improve bioprocess performance
- Design, write and manage standardized protocols
- Collaborate with co-development partners to drive shared process development goals
- Collaborate with Ark’s bioreactor and software design team to develop robust end-to-end processes that can be implemented at scale
- Establish and drive good knowledge management practices for the Process Science team
- Adhere to the relevant safety, documentation, and quality standards
- Technical responsibilities will include: dynamic cell culture, culture medium formulation, assay development, microscopy, image analysis, design of experiments, metabolite analysis, statistical analysis

About you

- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in biotechnology, chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, or other relevant fields
- 2+ years direct experience working with 50+ liter bioreactors
- Expertise evaluating cell culture health and productivity
- End-to-end skills in experiment planning, execution, data analysis, and documentation
- Can work independently and also excel in a team environment
- Keen to work in a high paced and fast-growing work environment
- Willingness to take on non-traditional tasks, roles, responsibilities, and challenges needed to accomplish company goals and objectives
- Familiar with the cellular agriculture field and cultivated meat production processes a plus
