Plasma Facing Materials Scientist

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

CFS is collaborating with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with new groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. The mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. The ARC power plant will be the first machine to produce electricity from fusion energy, serving as the cornerstone to a new industry. ARC will leverage the work that’s been done for SPARC, the CFS demonstration device, in developing HTS magnets and other key systems. However, because of its mission to deliver power to the grid, the ARC tokamak has several novel systems that will not be included in SPARC. The ARC group within R&D is a growing team that is delivering key scientific and engineering results to push the TRL of enabling technologies (blanket systems, materials, power conversion, etc.) higher.

The materials and manufacturing team within ARC R&D has openings for a Plasma Facing Materials Scientist aimed at meeting the challenges of a fusion power plant. Neutron fluxes produced by deuterium-tritium fusion, ion sputtering and erosion, high heat loads, and complex component topologies all introduce unique challenges for optimizing material selection while meeting manufacturing and cost requirements. ARC R&D will lead development and characterization of low TRL materials to allow for optimal material and manufacturing downselections for plasma facing components under steady state fusion power output. We are seeking experts in plasma facing materials and plasma-material interactions to lead these efforts.

This team member will:

- Lead testing and qualification of materials and components for plasma facing applications within ARC
- Engage with SPARC plasma facing components team to learn from divertor mission and define ARC performance requirements
- Translate performance requirements into material property specifications and define appropriate test methods
- Coordinate the design, fabrication, installation, operation, and analysis of experimental systems in-house and in collaboration with partners at Universities, National Laboratories, and Industry
- Ensure efficient and timely transfer of property data and new insight to the ARC Design team 
- Identify appropriate manufacturing and joining technologies for plasma facing components and systems, both existing and under development, and develop test plans to vet such technologies 
- Work closely with other CFS teams including the Safety team to manage chemical/mechanical/environmental hazards in existing and New experimental facilities, Adjacent R&D teams to optimally share pooled resources including equipment and personnel, Supply chain team to procure new equipment and materials, and/or the Manufacturing team to ensure fabrication methods are scalable
- Provide technical guidance to project team members to ensure efficient execution of design-build-test-learn cycles and retirement of technical risks

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

- PhD in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or a related field
- Experience leading/coordinating materials R&D projects from conception to execution 
- Familiarity with nuclear and plasma effects on material properties and performance
- Experience with utilizing University, International/National Laboratory, and/or outsourced testing and research organizations
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, technical staff and others
- Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
- Great communication and organizational skills 
- Strong problem solving skills and have an ability to approach new problems with creativity
- Resource estimation and projection skills
- Strong time management skills 
- Self - motivation and autonomy skills

Additional experience and/or qualifications:

- Ability to perform activities such as typing and sitting for extended periods of time
