Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation Engineer

ZeroAvia is a leader in zero-emission aviation, flying the world's largest hydrogen-electric aircraft since September 2020. Its focus is the design and commercialization of hydrogen-powered aviation solutions to address a variety of markets, initially targeting short-haul, sub-regional commercial flights up to 500 miles. To date, ZeroAvia has secured the UK CAA and FAA experimental permit to fly for its 6-seat aircraft powered by hydrogen-electric powertrain, passed significant flight tests, and is on track for commercial deliveries by 2024. Its achievements to date were rewarded by the UK prime minister by inviting ZeroAvia as a member to the UK Jet Zero Council. 

ZeroAvia’s powertrain development focuses on integrating hydrogen storage tanks, fuel cell systems, and electric motors, delivering a solution that will be not only without carbon emissions but also cheaper to operate. Commercializing the solution requires the establishment of a new clean aviation ecosystem, encompassing hydrogen production from renewable energy sources and tackling public perception of safety.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a multidisciplinary design optimisation models for powertrain and propulsion components 
  • Apply and develop MDO for propulsion system and power train including LRUs optimisation , Motor, Inverter, architecture, and impact on A/C performances 
  • Top down MDO approach from A/C to power train and propulsion - efficiency, weight, drag, reliability , cost , volume .. 
  • Actively support requirement capture by applying a broad set of computational electrical, mechanical and thermal and reliability  approaches to support and creatively contribute to data-driven propulsion  and power train design and optimisation. 
  • Develop and apply customised computational design optimization tools, workflows and models to extract, integrate, analyse and visualise complex electrical, structural, mechanical and chemical 
  • Develop and apply physics and empirically-based models and simulations across the fidelity spectrum for the conceptual design and performance estimation 
  • Development of novel analytical techniques with high fidelity and computational efficiency trade, model verification and robustness, and software architecture

Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience with at least one of the following advanced design methods: numerical optimization, multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) / multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO), and statistical modeling techniques 
  • Experience in decision-making in design problems featuring multiple independent parameters and metrics of interest.
  • Significant experience with MATLAB programming.
  • Experience with Motor, Inverter, compressors, cables, Battery modeling 
  • Experience with reliability, life time failure prediction algorithms
