Emergency Response/Fire Brigade Lead - Battery

Position Overview

This role will develop and be responsible for Proterra’s Emergency Response Team to include response to fire, chemical spill or medical emergencies. The role is to prepare hourly employees to actively be the immediate emergency response for any situation such as an uncontrolled fire, lithium ion thermal runaway or release of potentially harmful substances that may occur at the Proterra Battery Factory. A large part of this role will be to develop and implement an onsite fire brigade.

About the Role – You Will:
- Develop an organizational statement and standard operating procedures per NFPA 600 Standards on Facility Fire Brigades and OSHA 19.10.165 Fire Protection
- Develop pre-incident planning, assets and document systems, procedures, potential hazards, access to secure area, etc.
- Develop, implement and manage an incident management system
- Maintain active roster for Emergency Response/Fire Brigade Team.
- Responsible for development of annual training calendar and direct fire brigade members during training exercises monthly on all three shifts.
- Maintain training documentation to track participation,
- Conduct site evacuation drills, lithium ion battery event drills and other site potential emergency scenarios.
- Coordinate / schedule drills with local fire department
- Schedule, planning and oversite of Annual Fire/Hazmat/First Aid/CPR/AED training
- Responsible for maintaining all firefighting tools, equipment to include turnout gear, SCBA’s and hotel pack hoses.
- When onsite, be the incident commander, and respond to scene mitigate any potential lithium ion battery concerns, respond to fires, conduct spill cleanup and provide first aid as needed.
- Ability to perform Fire Brigade duties to include evacuating lithium ion battery packs, lay and connect hose; hold nozzles and direct water streams; and communicate and coordinate with local fire department.
- Responsible for documentation of all fire brigade/hazmat team responses.
- Support EHS activities to include, emergency action plan, new hire orientation, bloodborne pathogens, hot works, lockout tagout and others as assigned.
- Inspect working conditions to ensure all activities are compliant with safety guidelines.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Performing life threatening firefighting activities in an emergency situation;
- Running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations;
- Climbing stairs/ladders;
- Performing life-saving and rescue procedures;
- Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; and
- Other duties as assigned by management.

About You

  • Self-starter with the ability to adapt interpersonal styles and techniques to influence at all levels of the organization; Works well within a team environment and exhibits command presence and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting and emergency rescue.
  • Operation of fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, facilities and their proper use.
  • Emergency medical assistance and CPR techniques.
  • Basic techniques for handling hazardous materials.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communications skills.

Your Experience Includes
- 3-5 years of experience with EHS/safety/emergency response
- Ability to maintain composure in critical situations and communicate effectively, both written and verbal
- Display a high level of professionalism, integrity, and maturity
- Detail oriented with good organization and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels
- NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2, NFPA 1081 (Auxiliary Firefighters),
- NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800, or Fire Officer II,
- Occupational First Aid or Equivalent
- Associate’ or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management or related field.
- Minimum 5 years as a supervisor in a related emergency response field.
- Extensive knowledge of appropriate emergency protocols and procedures.
