Mill is all about answering a simple question: how can we prevent waste? Less waste can save time, money, energy, maybe even our planet. And there’s no better place to start than food. Food waste is one of the most solvable climate problems facing us today. Plus, our trash really stinks. It’s gross, heavy, and our least favorite chore. At Mill we are striving to build a better environment for all, as we take on climate and kitchen change.

We’re looking for a communications manager to help us create a new category, articulate the market opportunity we see, and how we intend to deliver on our mission in partnership with the people & communities we serve, and within the broader climate movement. This is a multi-year campaign, and you will have an appetite for bold and creative people-focused storytelling across channels & formats at both a national and local level. You will have excellent media relations in the consumer space, and a great grasp of the interaction between media, influencers and social channels, and how they create meaningful connections for people. You’ll have a passion for sustainability (experience working in the space is a big benefit) and an ability to make complex topics simple and accessible for different audiences.
You will be an ambassador for Mill and be skilled at building and enabling relationships on behalf of the company. You will be able to communicate with all the audiences we seek to reach, using the most relevant channel.

Our ideal candidate will have experience with fast-growing companies, executing a consumer communications strategy across various channels and understanding how to closely integrate social and influencer, while overseeing day-to-day press office management to drive consistent coverage and maintain momentum. You will thrive in a mission-driven company, have excellent interpersonal skills, and value a feedback-based environment. Given our size and stage of growth, you will have the ability to pivot quickly, seize opportunity and handle ambiguity.

As a manager in communications, you will:
- Help set strategy for our consumer communications, in close collaboration with our marketing team & social channels: You will help create the strategy, storylines, outreach programs and identify target outlets for our consumer media strategy, across online, broadcast, newsletter and event channels. You will be the first point of contact for consumer media, helping them understand, get inspired by and cover Mill. You will create, ideate and execute consumer media-led campaigns, asset creation and our always-on press office calendars to ensure we’re engaging with media in the most effective way.
- Set local and community communications strategy, supporting state-by-state policy and business goals, driving positive coverage for the company at the local level including crafting messaging, identifying media targets, and preparing all briefing materials/documents and necessary assets in partnership with Creative & Business teams
- Set strategy for and execute product review program across all media, working with Product & Customer Support teams to ensure a delightful experience for reviewers.
- Manage editorial calendar and lead content creation for Mill's owned platforms, including but not limited to our Newsroom and LinkedIn to tell our story across owned channels
- Maintain all communications content ensuring consistency and accuracy, serve as first point of contact for newsroom updates and work directly with Creative to develop and secure assets on behalf of all communications programs needs
- Oversee Mill's day-to-day press office activity including management and prioritization of inbound media inquiries, and building, maintaining and enhancing Mill's key relationships with media, with a focus on the climate & sustainability space, as well as local media and product reviews contacts
- Oversee delivery of PR results to internal stakeholders by owning the internal merchandising and recaps of PR results to communicate impact and measurement methodologies for cross-functional partners and leadership
- Be an early member of a growing communications team, who are ‘best in class,’ empowers and supports each other, and help to define what the Mill Communications team is known for.
- Be an ambassador for our culture and our company

Ideally you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 7+ years in Communications, Communications & Marketing roles or a journalistic background
- Extensive knowledge of and relationships with the media and influencers, particularly in the climate and sustainability space and demonstrated success of using your own network to drive coverage
- Exceptional communication skills, writing skills, interpersonal skills, and ethical mindset
- You have a strong understanding of the climate change space and how the media landscape is changing and can adapt a communications strategy to reflect that
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and are able to thrive in ambiguity and pave a path forward
- The ability to zoom in and out. A strong strategic mindset with detail-oriented execution, and a knack for learning quickly

The estimated base salary range for this position is $175k to $200k, which does not include the value of benefits or a potential equity grant. A wide range of factors are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, market conditions, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and business and organizational needs.
