We help farmers, energy generators, and insurers make better decisions with exceptionally accurate 2-52 week weather forecasts. Our award-winning machine learning is grounded in decades of research at MIT/WHOI to produce actionable insights. As a seed-stage venture-backed startup, we are growing rapidly and looking for curious and motivated creators so the world can forecast further.

Job Responsibilities

As a Climate Scientist you will improve our subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) forecasting engine through the application of novel climate teleconnections, data sources, and processing methods. You will also develop analytics and translation layers on top of our core weather data to make probabilistic S2S information actionable and insightful for a variety of stakeholders.

  • Improve Salient’s core subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting engine, particularly temperature and wind
  • Build data pipelines for novel climate predictors and other weather datasets
  • Work with the Machine Learning team to design physics-informed model architectures
  • Present and explain progress and results to internal teams and external customers
  • Interface with product and business leads to prioritize efforts

Location
- Boston region preferred
- US remote OK

Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Deep expertise in atmospheric science (PhD or equivalent)
- Experience with subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting using machine learning
- Ability to rapidly prototype new scientific ideas into operational tools and communicate results
- US work authorization (no visa sponsorship)

Additional Qualifications:
- Experience with Python (preferred), R, or MATLAB
- Familiarity with our domain-specific tools:
- Deep learning platforms (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Geospatial data (e.g. NetCDF, GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, PostGIS)
- Earth science (e.g. xarray, Dask)
- Cloud platforms (e.g. GCP, AWS, Azure)
