Want to help change how the world is fed?

Higher Steaks was founded to transform the global food system by making delicious and nutritious food – from animal cells and plants. We are pioneering the development of cultivated meat to solve some of the world’s growing challenges in health, sustainability and animal welfare.

We're a purpose, science and engineering-driven company dedicated to creating the breakthrough technologies that will push the boundaries of what’s possible – delivering innovations that benefit people, the planet and animals.

Our brilliant team are experts in their respective fields, drawn from around the world. We’re passionate, curious, innovative and at the forefront of the ground-breaking work being done in this exciting and rapidly growing sector. Higher Steaks is a well-funded biotech company; we’ve experienced spectacular growth over the last few years and continue to accelerate every month.
We expect to be tripling our headcount this year so this is a great time to join us and solve one of the most important challenges we face today!

The role

Our Materials team is central to the innovative R&D work we do here at Higher Steaks and this role is a key new hire for us. You’ll work closely with our Cell & Molecular Biologists and Biomaterials specialists, e.g. improving our cell differentiation and cell culture maturation methods in both 2D and 3D environments, to align with and replicate the complexities in structure and texture of traditional meat.

You will also work closely with our Stem Cell and Bioprocess teams as part of our collective research and development effort, tackling problems that have never been attempted before and redefining what’s possible in the production of cultivated meat.
We’ll soon move into our new, much larger and comprehensively kitted-out state of the art facility in Cambridge, UK. This role will be based full time at this location, including some occasional weekend or out-of-core hours work.

What you’ll be doing:
- Conducting a range of innovative experiments and performing subsequent analysis
- Culturing cells in both adherent and suspension culture conditions (training available) including joint working with the Bioprocessing team
- Stem cell culture and maintenance, including ensuring cells are available for the team on an as-needed basis
- Preparing culture media and other reagents for yourself and the team
- Contributing to the key processes that enable the day to day running of the cell culture facility, including but not limited to:
- replenishing stocks
- writing H&S documentation e.g. SOPs
- consumables ordering and inventory checks.
- Contributing to the routine testing of cells e.g. for adventitious agents (training will be provided).
- Performing any other reasonable duties, as required including carrying out prescribed tasks with minimal direct supervision

What we think you need:
- Technical experience in a life sciences discipline and preferably biological or biochemical research (means you can credibly undertake the tasks listed above)
- Time spent working a laboratory support role
- Cell culture experience with excellent aseptic technique and relevant technical knowledge
- Familiar with lab health and safety documentation and procedures
- Familiarity using a wide range of general laboratory equipment (ideally including microscopy
- Full familiarity with the safe handling and storage of laboratory materials
- The communication skills to interact with a range of people, from interns to senior leadership
- An inclusive mindset and an understanding of the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace
- Ability to organise and manage own workload (after consultation with manager)
- The ability and willingness to work as part of a team, but also the ability and willingness to work on your own initiative and learn new skills
- Ability to be flexible to meet deadlines

We’d love it if you also have:
- A BSc, or equivalent qualification (HNC/HND/NVQ, BTEC/ONC at level three or equivalent)
- Stem cell culture experience (e.g. iPSCs, ESCs, MSCs)
- qPCR working knowledge and/or experience
- Suspension cell culture experience (of any cell lines)
- Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) (although training will be provided)

Alongside a competitive base salary all our people get these benefits:
- Share options
- Flexible hours
- Quizzes and other fun team activities
- Enhanced parental leave pay
- Cycle-to-work scheme and gym membership
- "Make your work life easier" annual stipend
- Snacks, fruits, tea, coffee and more!

Closing date for applications: 26th June 2022 - but please apply sooner as we will interview good candidates as we see them.
